DICKINSON COUNTY FREEDOM ROCK AND
LAKE PARK VETERANS MEMORIAL
This memorial at Lake Park is home to one of 99 hand-painted “Freedom Rocks” in Iowa. Nationally known for painting patriotic murals, the artist, Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II had an idea to paint a Veteran dedication rock in all of Iowa’s counties. Each rock has its own design, unique from all the other Freedom Rocks.
Located in Dickinson County just 15 minutes northwest of Lake Okoboji, this memorial park honors all past, current and future Veterans. The memorial display spheres symbolize the unity among the branches of service and Veterans. Individual large, field stones at each branch represent the strength and determination of the military men and women. The top circle honors Veterans’ families along with engraved pavers.
Sorensen’s original 60+ ton Freedom Rock was created in 1999 at Adair County. The artist concluded the Iowa “Freedom Rock Tour” and has now begun the 50-State Freedom Rock Tour across the United States with seven states sporting completed rocks.
