WEBSTER VETERANS MEMORIAL

This memorial was dedicated in 1985 at the entrance of the Day County Courthouse, Webster, SD. Engraved into the granite stone are the VFW and American Legion Seals along with the phrase “dedicated to all the Veterans of Day County and those who will come after us for their service to God and Country.”

One of the most notable people born in Webster is journalist and author Tom Brokaw. He was one of the biggest three news anchors dominating the airwaves during the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. Brokaw authored “The Greatest Generation” that profiles many WWII Veteran’s stories of war and survival. About the book, Brokaw wrote: "it is, I believe, the greatest generation any society has ever produced. These men and women fought not for fame and recognition, but because it was the right thing to do.”

Brokaw was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama in 2014. This award recognizes people who have made a remarkable contribution to American interests, world peace or other endeavor. This is one of two of the highest civilian awards in the United States.
